Search engines regularly search through the internet finding links to new sites, once they find a new site they add it to their search engine, the more links to that site that they find they higher your page rank is. 
If you can not think where you will put links to your site, I will put links to your site on mine, I will do this regardless unless you tell me not to. I can even list your site in forums and advertise your site for no extra cost, but you must ask me to do this.
